Casework Services: Chemistry
Footwear Comparison
At Manlove Forensics we undertake footwear comparison and intelligence services. We will re-assess work previously undertaken by the Crown to check accuracy and strength of evidence. We have access to the latest databases that assist in providing a robust result.
We are regularly called upon to assist in more specialised cases such as those involving marks on bodies as well as more conventional footwear marks on other surfaces.
Our expert assisted in pioneering the technique to identify the level of force inflicted upon a person when kicked/stamped on making clothing an important aspect of these cases.
Toolmarks and Physical Fits
We examine and review evidence on the origin of marks and reconstruction of articles. Reports focus on the interpretation of whether or not the item in question could have made the marks described. We will also provide expert testimony on whether or not items could have originally come from one origin but been broken/torn apart.
Packaging Analysis
Comparison of the individual features of polythene bags and cling-film, for example to a roll of such bags or wrapping material can be made and we undertake work in this area.
Trace Evidence
Glass
Glass is transferred when a window/mirror or other such item is broken. The amount of glass on any people near to such an event depends on their location and actions at the time and this evidence can be reviewed by our experts. With experience in interpreting glass evidence and reconstruction of events we aim to maximise the forensic value of this tried and tested evidential type. We frequently attend other laboratories to review work requested by the CPS.
Paint
Paint evidence is examined from the point of its physical appearance (colours, layers) and chemical constituents where a physical examination is not sufficient. We will re-examine work conducted by the Crown’s expert as well as conduct our own analysis where appropriate.
Fibres
We use the latest technology to provide a fibre analysis service. We also re-examine the Crown’s expert findings in respect of fibres and textiles evidence. In addition to re-examining their findings we can also undertake further analysis using the latest microscopic and spectroscopic techniques such as RAMAN to ensure you are provided with nothing but the best service.
Fire, Explosion and Accelerant Analysis
Our experts will review evidence provided by the Crown regarding the causes of fires and injuries inflicted by thermal effects in addition to the accelerants that could have been used. If appropriate we will undertake the laboratory examination of items in addition to carrying out burning tests and incident reconstruction where appropriate.
Chemical Enhancement
We have a vast experience of using chemical techniques to enhance the quality and contrast of a variety of marks. From scene examination to the reconstruction of events, even when there have been attempts to clean up, to identification and comparison of footwear marks and enhancement of fingerprints.
We will attend scenes to enhance marks, specialising in those made in blood. From luminal to DAB, we are up-to-date with the most contemporary of techniques.
